Achievements

Our achievements so far include:
- Re-generation of Castle Lane area as a Cultural Quarter, after 40 years of dereliction. Construction was completed in Autumn 2008.
- Re-development of Riverside Square instigated for the construction of apartments, restaurants and niche retail units, which has been granted planning permission. Construction has been delayed by world recessionary conditions.
- Re-development of 1960’s bus station and shopping area instigated for which planning permission has been granted. It will include a department store and a major food retailer; construction has been delayed by world recessionary conditions.
- Persuasion of National Institute for Research into Aquatic Habitats (NIRAH) to establish its conservation and research activities in a bio-tope and a science park to be constructed in a disused clay pit at Stewartby. Planning permission has been granted for the development, including a visitors’ centre and supporting hotels, conference centre and leisure facilities. Financing and construction has been delayed world recessionary conditions.
An improved river area, thanks to the refurbishment of the Castle Mound.- Obtaining Business Improvement District (BID) status for the town centre, with even more security for its users and helpful ambassadors on the streets.
- One-stop shop established in the re-furbished no.7 St Paul’s Square for several voluntary organisations.
- A reduction in violence from late-night drinkers in pubs and clubs by means of the Bed:Safe scheme.
- Cleaner streets.
